You have a good definition of data science: "create value using data". I think specializing can be a good strategy, however, in my opinion resourcefulness and adaptability are key. I, for instance, have a background in physics, which gives me a large toolbox for tackling problems. With a solid foundation like that it becomes a lot easier to delve deeply into a specific data science subject.
